Press Release: MPN steps up to provide justice to Under Trial Prisoners

As per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 21% of the under trial prisoners are Muslims when compared to only 16% Muslim Population. Last year, lot of media coverage was given in this regard and Muslim Professionals Network (MPN) decided to take up this initiative under the name “Project Uncaged”. When we started surveying prisons, we realised that, this isn’t a Muslim or a Hindu problem. So, we started providing legal aid to the deserving people, irrespective of their caste/creed/Religion, this is on the similar lines of the legal aid guaranteed/provided under the Indian Constitution to the needy, who cannot afford a lawyer.

Also, our survey revealed two types of alarming cases. The first type was those who were at the wrong place at the wrong time and got picked up by Police on suspicion and implicated. And the second type was people who have committed petty crimes but stuck in jail as under trials for more time than the actual punishment for the crime itself. We believe a jailed citizen of India is a burden on the Government’s exchequer, non-productive for his family, society and the Nation. MPN set-up a team of 5 competent lawyers under the leadership of Mirza Qudrathullah Baig @ Akbar. Over the last six months, the team has expanded to 9 lawyers (3 female and 4 male Advocates), who all are offering pro bono (free/voluntary) services for this cause. Over the last six months, the team has expanded to 9 lawyers (3 female and 4 male Advocates), who all are offering pro bono (free/voluntary) services for this cause. Before taking up the case, MPN’s lawyers do vetting of the candidate and try their best to ensure that, we are only taking up cases of people who are innocent. So far, we have succeeded in obtaining 5 bails and one candidate was acquitted as well by Hon’ble Addl. Metropolitan Session Judge at Hyderabad as the case did not have any merits or specific allegations against the accused. MPN has also taken up the case of a youth, who was killed at the prime age of 24 years when he tried to stop the eve teasers from harassing a girl, he died of injuries in August 2012. The then State Government had announced an ex-gratia of Rupees 5 lakhs. Till around February 2017 neither justice nor ex-gratia was delivered to the family of the victim. MPN’s legal team filed a Writ Petition in the High Court of Telangana on 6th February 2017 and a charge sheet was filed within a record 19 days of filing the Writ Petition, our legal team is hopeful of getting the ex-gratia too once the High Court reopens after the summer vacation. Apart from this, MPN has taken up the case of a Hindu lady (details withheld for various reasons) who was abandoned by her husband. This lady gave birth to a child with some congenital deformities, due to which the child could not stand on his feet properly, and her husband never came forward to support his wife or disabled child monetarily or otherwise. The husband has filed the divorce proceedings in another State. We have taken up this case at Supreme Court level to provide justice to the lady. “When we started the project, we put an active effort to identify Muslim prisoners struck in jails. But soon we

“When we started the project, we put an active effort to identify Muslim prisoners struck in jails. But soon we realised that the miseries suffered by the family members of jailed people are similar irrespective of their caste, creed or Religion and that is when we decided to extend our help to people of other communities too, all the donors of MPN are Muslims and they have happily agreed to support this decision. When you look at the sufferings of innocent people stuck in jails without proper/timely trials, you don’t think about which Religion the person belongs to. As a human, you just want to help that person get timely justice. MPN will continue to provide legal help to everyone irrespective of their Belief. That’s our commitment” said Mohammed Abubakr, President of MPN. “Before taking up any case, we do a lot of background vetting of the candidate. “Before taking up any case, we do a lot of background vetting of the candidate. We also take the opinion of the concerned Police Authorities, if required. Only when we are convinced of the innocence of the candidate, we take up the cases. We have received positive support from Jail authorities, who themselves referred candidates to us who were believed to be innocent but couldn’t afford a lawyer due to financial constraints” says Akbar, who is the Lead for Project Uncaged.

Press Release: MPN Launches Helpline Project for Minorities for Availing State and Central Government Schemes

Every year, both Central and State Governments in India announce tens of schemes worth hundreds of crores for minorities, often with the good intent to uplift the conditions of minorities. However, it’s undeniable that, minorities have consistently failed to utilise Government Schemes due to various reasons. Lack of awareness of the schemes, tedious documentation, irresponsive government institutions, etc., are some of the common reasons for minorities failing to avail benefits of schemes.

Muslim Professional Network (MPN), an NGO headquartered in Hyderabad, has come up with a strategic Help Line Project to guide & enrich the Minorities in India to avail the benefits of Central and State Government schemes. The objectives of Helpline Project include:

  • Create awareness about the Central and State Government Schemes
  • Based on the financial status of the candidate, identify which Government Scheme is applicable and guide the candidate in availing the benefits.
  • Track the complaints people have while availing the schemes and follow-up with the concerned government institutions systematically to resolve the bottlenecks.

As per of Project Helpline, MPN is plaining to create three touch points for the people:

  1. 1800-8333-786: Toll-Free Number (1800-8333-786) that people can call between 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM starting from 1st February 2017. Based on the details provided by the caller, we will identify the schemes applicable and guide about the process to avail the schemes. The caller can also leave his/her number for us to reach back with more information in case we aren’t able to solve his/her query immediately on the phone.

  1. Com: We have released a website named “IndiaSchemes.com”, where detailed information about various schemes introduced by Central and State Government is mentioned. The details about the schemes will be regularly updated by MPN Volunteers after interacting with various Government Institutions.

  1. MPN Help Desks: We plan to set-up Help Desks at various community centres on the weekends to educate people about Central and State Government’s schemes. We are piloting the MPN Help Desk program at Haj House, Hyderabad starting from 4th February 2017. MPN Volunteers will be available at Haj House every weekend between 10:00 AM -2:00 PM to help people apply for government schemes.

“Telangana Government has announced multiple schemes such as Shaadi Mubarak, Overseas Education Scheme, etc. for the benefit of minorities. Now, it’s our responsibility to ensure that, these schemes are availed properly by minorities. Our target for first six months is to help 10,000 people successfully avail minority schemes” says Mir Mahmood Ali, who has volunteered to be the Project Manager for Helpline Project.

“While we are starting small, we strongly believe we can scale this project throughout India. Both Toll-Free Number as well as IndiaSchemes.com can be easily be scaled across India. After the initial pilot phase, we will aggressively push for setting up Help Desks in every city of India. We want every deserving member of minority to avail the schemes and benefit from it” said Mohammed Abubakr, President of MPN.

“MPN has previously helped other organisations such as AIMPLB set-up Toll-Free number to reach out to thousands of people. With that as an experience, we are extremely confident that, we will be able to market the Toll-Free Number across India and connect with the deserving minorities” says Khalid Saifullah, General Secretary of MPN.

Press Release: MPN Appreciates Indian Army’s Surgical Strikes on Pakistan

Unless India stands up to the world, no one will respect us. In this world, fear has no place. Only  strength respects strength.” – Former President APJ Abdul Kalam.

Muslim Professional Network (MPN) of India highly appreciates Indian Army’s tactical move of conducting surgical strikes on Pakistan in order to protect our nation from terrorist activities. It’s a bold and aggressive move by Indian Government and we are completely supportive of such action. Whenever Pakistan sponsored terrorist attacks have happened in India, the inaction of Indian government resulted in exploitation by Hindutva forces to blame Indian Muslims, as though they were responsible for terror activities of Pakistan. For long, Indian Muslims have demanded Indian government to retaliate and teach Pakistan a lesson. However, there voice has never been heard and instead they were being falsely targeted for the inaction of government.

We are now in 2016, where India is a global economic and military power. We have reached to this state by the virtue of tremendous hard work by the people of India. We are fed up with the “JUMLEBAZI” of the respective governments in India and finally, Indian government has heard what people want. We cannot remain silent whenever terrorist attacks happen on Indian soil especially when we have clear evidence. So, this bold move by BJP led Indian Government is definitely the need of the hour to teach Pakistan a lesson” said Mohammed Abubakr, President of MPN.

Abubakr adds “Our previous response for terror attacks was sending dossiers to Pakistan and honestly it wasn’t working. And in order to pacify the anger of people, Government was doing gimmicks like stopping cricket matches with Pakistan or protesting against Pakistan’s actors or singers. However, what was needed was military action rather than cheap gimmicks. There is no point in having one of the world’s largest military, when we can’t use it. These surgical strikes graduate us to the next level of achieving our ambition of becoming a super-power and imposing our power and presence across Asia and elsewhere”.

“The people of our country, irrespective of their religion are absolutely united against terrorism. India has given repeated warnings to Pakistan to stop sponsoring terrorist activities and instead use the funds for eradication of poverty or improvement of education in Pakistan. However, Pakistan’s Government continues to spend funds either sponsoring terrorism or hiring travel agents in India. Now that we have taken action on the terrorist camps in Pakistan, it’s also time to take some action on the travel agents of Pakistan, who have repeatedly asked Indian Muslims to go to Pakistan. Such travel agents have successfully infiltrated our own BJP led government and are openly asking Indian citizens to go to Pakistan” says Khalid, Secretary of MPN.

MPN hopes that, through these surgical strikes Pakistan learns a lesson and backs off from sponsoring terrorist activities in India. Ultimately we want peace and prosperity in the region, where people of India and Pakistan aren’t suffering from poverty or lack of education.

Press Release: MPN Strongly Condemns alleged involvement of Muslim Youth in Terrorist activities in Hyderabad

Muslim Professional Network (MPN), a Hyderabad based NGO, strongly condemns the alleged involvement of Hyderabadi Muslim Youth in terrorist activities and their alleged ties with Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL).  The alleged activities of these youth are brought disrepute and shame to the community.

In the recent sting operation by media outlets, it was shown that politicians and self-acclaimed religious leaders were willing to take money for organizing riots. There is a strong possibility that, terrorism too is being used as a political tool and these misguided youth can potentially be just pawns in the hands of such politicians and self-acclaimed religious leaders. Therefore, it’s critical for the investigative authorities to conduct impartial enquiry and disclose the details to the public.  Given the past record of arresting innocent Muslim youth and subjecting them to years of torture, there are concerns within the community that needs to be addressed. We are also requesting the Chief Minister of Telangana to look into this matter.

One of the key objectives of MPN is development of the Muslim Youth from both professional and personal point of view. There is lot of work needed in this direction as Muslim Youth is searching for real-life inspiration and is in extreme need of mentoring. MPN, through its members who work at various reputed multinational companies and emerging start-ups has been attempting to mentor Muslim Youth towards the right direction. Obviously, this is a herculean task and looking at the recent events, it’s a reminder that, lot of progress is needed.

“Mentoring Muslim youth is the need of the hour. There is so much energy and passion in Muslim youth, which needs to be channelled in the right direction. Unfortunately, the radical elements are exploiting the vacuum and misguiding our youth. It’s a wakeup call for us. At MPN, we are strongly encouraging our members to mentor one youth, be like an elder brother/sister and channel the energy in the right direction. We want Muslim youth to achieve success in life. We want them to compete, join the top companies like Microsoft, Google and Apple and create successful start-ups like Uber, InMobi and Flipkart” say Mohammed Abubakr, President of MPN, ex-Microsoft employee.

“There is strong need for accomplished Muslims, especially those who have risen up in their careers to take time out and speak one-on-one with Muslim youth. Majority of us have got so busy in our life that, we don’t have time to talk to youth, who are looking up to us for inspiration and guidance.  Just 1 hour a week can change the life of the youth” says Khalid, Secretary of MPN.
